Volunteer Opportunities January 2022

TAXIDERMIST

We are seeking a taxidermist who is willing to donate their services. If you know of any candidates, please contact us at programs@scvas.org.

FIELD TRIP HOSTS

Help SCVAS inspire people to care about birds! Have a great excuse to go out birding!  Share your excitement about birding with others! Sign up to help host SCVAS joint events with Billy DeFrank LGBTQ+ Community Center, Saved by Nature and more.

We need some friendly volunteers to help host field trips. While the field trip leaders are busy spotting birds for the trip participants and sharing their love of birding, we need other volunteers to help "host" the field trip. You would welcome the attendees, help to establish an inclusive tone, and encourage an appreciation of birds and nature.  Required: You should be a member of SCVAS, have some birding knowledge and be 18 years or older.

If you are interested in joining our team, please contact Carolyn Knight at programs@scvas.org.

FIELD TRIP LEADERS

SCVAS is growing our team of field trip leaders for our member-led free field trips that are open to the public. We are looking for a diverse group of people who are enthusiastic about sharing their love of birds and nature, can set a welcoming, inclusive tone and can communicate the mission of the organization.

Leaders share their favorite birding locations with others by selecting their field trip locations and routes, and setting the pace of the trip. Trips can range from short walks in urban parks to long hikes in the hills. Leaders can plan wheelchair-accessible trips, family trips, or trips for advanced birders and will be provided guidance from the field trip coordinator if needed.

We especially need leaders for regular trips to Don Edwards at the Environmental Education Center, Pearson-Arastradero (or similar) and Ulistac Natural Area. We are also looking for volunteers to lead accessible short walks at various parks around the county.

SCVAS trip leaders are given access to SCVAS classes, provided with training on eBird if needed, and are invited to special team events.

To help get you started, you may shadow some of our experienced leaders.

Time Commitment: Variable, our leaders lead anywhere from 2 trips a month to one trip a year.

Required: SCVAS member, intermediate or better birding skills, 18 years or older. A willingness to learn the eBird mobile app is preferred.

If you are interested in joining our team, please contact Eve Meier at fieldtrips@scvas.org.

SELF-GUIDED FIELD TRIP WRITERS

Do you have a favorite birding place that would make a great self-guided field trip? We are looking for more submissions. This task does not require any technical skills besides email, it only requires a love of your location and basic birding knowledge. We will make the maps for you, collect any bird photos you need, and even take the location photos. Please contact Eve Meier at fieldtrips@scvas.org for more information.

SPANISH SPEAKER

We are looking for a volunteer who speaks Mexican Spanish to help translate and/or proofread our Spanish self-guided field trips. This job can be done entirely from home. Please contact Carolyn Knight, our Education and Outreach Manager at programs@scvas.org.
