Program Topic: World seabirding and seabird photography

Mike Danzenbaker

Over the past several years I've spent an aggregate of several months at sea watching and photographing the world's seabirds, concentrating on the tubenoses (albatrosses, petrels, and shearwaters). Despite their rather colorless plumage, these are some of the most fascinating birds in the world and spend their entire lives on some of the most remote areas of the earth. They nest on relatively inaccessible islands, and otherwise roam the world's oceans nowhere near land, living lives we can scarcely imagine. Many are threatened or endangered, some critically so. Many require a concerted effort to find and observe. I'd like to share with you some of what I've learned about these birds, and talk about some of the challenges of photographing them.
