American Avocet with dowitchers by Diane McCoy

Palo Alto Baylands: Seasons Changing

The seasons are changing; summer into fall and along with these changes we see the first fall migrating birds arriving, while continuing to enjoy the 'growing up' bird families from this summer. Along the trails, and in the sloughs we'll look for resident American Avocets and Black-necked Stilts, Killdeer, pelicans and maybe a Northern Harrier. We will check in on the Barn and Cliff Swallows with the youngsters getting ready to fledge, while spotting returning migrants including sandpipers, dowitchers, Marbled Godwits and more numbers of Yellowlegs, Willets, Long-billed Curlews and Whimbrels.

Trip Difficulty: 2 miles. Gravel and dirt trails; little or no elevation gain, little to no shade

Other Trip Notes: Trip will be cancelled if weather is too hot.
