Winter birding at Santa Clara Valley Water District Headquarters (SCVWD)

Located in Almaden Valley, adjacent to Almaden Lake, and hidden behind the SCVWD headquarters are two percolation ponds, drought tolerant gardens, and the start of the Guadalupe River. We’ll scan the ponds and the Guadalupe River in search of ducks, wading birds, and songbirds. If we’re lucky, we will spot the Scaly-breasted Munia that breed in the area.

Trip Difficulty: 1.5 miles, paved and gravel trails, little or no elevation gain, little to no shade

Meet: sidewalk in front of 5700 Almaden Expy

Directions: From CA-85, take Almaden Expy south. At Via Monte Dr (first light after crossing Blossom Hill), make a U-turn then make the next right and turn into the headquarters parking lot.
