Elegant Tern by Chuq Von Rospach

MEMBERS ONLY - SUNNYVALE WATER POLLUTION CONTROL PLANT / POND A4

This will be a challenging walk and is recommended for moderate or experienced birders with spotting scopes. We will explore as far out as we can go around Pond A4, return to the parking area for a break before heading out to explore the East and West ponds of the Sunnyvale WPCP. Elegant Terns, waterfowl, and gulls will be present as will many other species and we should finish with well over 50 species. We will study gulls and perhaps get lucky with a Jaeger harassing terns this time of year. Take note of the possible mileage as we plan to cover a lot of ground in this trip.

Trip Difficulty: 4-6 miles, flat gravelly trails

Note: A spotting scope is highly recommended for this trip as the ponds are very large.

Meet: Carl Rd parking lot, under the tree, near the porta-potty

Directions: From CA-237 in Sunnyvale, exit Lawrence Expy/Caribbean Dr. Continue onto Caribbean Dr. In about 1.2 miles, turn right at Borregas then left on Carl Rd following the signs to the bay trail access parking lot. Latitude/Longitude: 37.419133, -122.018296.

Parking Notes: If the Carl Rd parking lot is full or closed, there is additional parking along Caribbean Dr just west of Borregas Ave. You can reach the meeting point by using the bay trail access point on Caribbean Dr: Latitude/Longitude: 37.417595, -122.018838

Facilities: porta-potty (usually unpleasant), drinking water
