Bay Area Bird Photographers (BABP)

Capturing Wings: Young Bird Photographers Soaring High

by Valerie Wong and Rajan Rao

Today's young photographers are not just capturing images; they're connecting with nature through their cameras. Their passion goes beyond mere snapshots; it's a testament to their commitment to conservation and appreciation for biodiversity. In this digital age, where screens often dominate attention, these young photographers offer a refreshing perspective, encouraging others to look up, explore, and marvel at the wonders of the world around them and help preserve it. They remind us that nature is waiting to be discovered and cherished by all who dare to take a few minutes to explore. Two such artists are going to share their passion with us.

Valerie Wong - Valerie Wong is a senior at St. Francis High School from Mountain View, California. A lifelong lover of the natural world, Valerie discovered birding during the pandemic and is now an avid birder and wildlife photographer. She is a co-founder of the Santa Clara Valley Young Birders Club, and hopes to share her passion for wildlife with kids in the Bay Area. In her free time, she’s also an origami artist, aspiring home cook, and musician. She hopes to share her unique experience discovering wildlife photography as a young birder and finding her own style in the world of bird photography.

Rajan Rao - is Junior at Lick-Wilmerding High School in San Francisco, California. Rajan has been birding in and around the Bay Area for the past 6 years. He was sparked by the amazing biodiversity and adaptations of his local bird species. He spends his free time exploring new birding locations, documenting various fauna with a camera, and teaching within the birders’ community. He has been the co-president of the California Young Birders’ Club for the past two years, and he is growing both his birding and photography skills to bring more people into the natural world.
