Spring Birdathon: 2015 Calendar with Guided Team descriptions

Please register for a team at least one week prior to the count day so there is time for the team leader to contact you with full information about the count day.

Read how to participate, containing all you need to know! Gather your own Self-Guided Private Team or join one of our Guided Public Teams (described below) and register online. To compete for prizes, all participants must raise or donate at least $50 (but we hope you will raise more!). Raise more money to win the best prizes.

This is a great opportunity to bring your team together to plan, size up the competition, get ideas, or just get jazzed. See some of this year's great prizes on display! Enjoy wine and refreshments with entertainment. Held at McClellan Ranch Preserve (get directions).

24-Hour Team with Lisa Myers of Let's Go Birding
The Picidaes will start at 7:30 AM and count until dusk in select spots around Santa Clara County. This is the perfect team regardless of your birding skill level - everyone is welcome, you'll have a great time and team members are gracious and helpful for all who wish to participate. If you need a pair of binoculars, let Lisa know and they will be provided. Team limited to 20. Full day. 100+ species. Register for this team.

The Chickadees will join the Big Sit challenge this year to compete to see the most bird species from one circle. 24-Hour Team with Pati Rouzer
This fun team welcomes young birders ages 8-16. Birders must have basic binocular and identification skills and the interest to bird for six hours (and a willing parent to accompany them). We will begin at 7:30 AM, break for a 30-minute lunch and continue to approximately 2:00 PM. Pati serves on the Board of Directors for Sequoia Audubon, is an avid birder and international trip leader. Register for this team.

Join this long-time birder and SCVAS Board Member for an active day in the field. They'll start early for owls in the western foothills, zigzag to the Bay for shorebirds, and then climb up the eastern slope, ending after dusk. Take a leisurely one-mile stroll along Stevens Creek from McClellan Road to Stevens Creek Blvd. as we conduct the Creek Cruiser's twelfth annual spring bird survey. After the first four Birdathon hours, you are invited to continue on for about two hours more to complete the survey by birding the Stocklmeir property where Cupertino's creek restoration project is newly completed! We will attempt to see or hear 50 species. Register for this team.

Go green and go mean! This whirlwind bayside biking adventure starts by Crittenden Marsh and heads over to Charleston Slough, encompassing a surprising array of habitats. The MGBM will bike roughly 10 miles at a moderate pace. It's not about speed, it's about enthusiasm for the birds! High-performance road bikes are not recommended for these trailts - use your own judgement. Bird and bike from 6:45 AM to 10:45 AM. 80+ species. Register for this team.

This is a high intensity day with one of the Bay Area's premier birders. Start your big-day early with owling and continue until sunset. Joining this team is a perfect way to celebrate John J. Audubon who was born on this day in 1785! Predawn-to-dusk. 160+ species. Register for this team.

Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at 5 pm
To be considered for prizes, you must submit your individual Results Form (PDF or editable MS Word), pledge sheets, and money raised (at least $50) by this deadline. Please submit a form no matter how little you raised since these forms will be used to calculate your team total. Reporting every tiny bit helps your team!

Awards Dinner

Find out who won the big prizes! All Spring Birdathon participants are encouraged to attend the dinner at McClellan Ranch Preserve (get directions). There will be free food and refreshments, games, surprises, raffles, and fun for all! Prizes will be distributed at the dinner. You do not have to attend the Awards Dinner to win. However, if you can't attend, you must make your own arrangements to pick up your prize at the SCVAS Office.
