San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties are blessed with some of the best birding in California! In 2017 SAS and SCVAS are collaborating to bring a series of three field trips that will be held along the borders between our two counties. Destinations include:

1. San Francisquito Creek and O’Connor Pond

2.  Los Trancos and Monte Bello OSP

3. Menlo Park/Palo Alto along most westerly sections of San Francisquito Creek

Each trip in this “package” of field trips will be run by our most experienced and popular field trip leaders from both SAS and SCVAS, so come along and enjoy “Birding the Border” with us!

Trip #1: San Franciscquito Creek and O'Connor Pond

Time: 8:30 AM-11:00AM

Leaders: Francis Todi and Garth Harwood (Ftoldi@earthlink.net and gharwood@hiddenvilla.org)

Description: On this first “Birding the Border” trip, join Francis Todi and Garth Harwood as they explore this fantastic Bayside area. Most of the shorebirds and water birds that spend the winter in the Bay Area are likely on this walk, and there’s always the chance of something exciting! The trip will meet at the parking lot at the end of Geng Road near the Baylands Athletic Center in Palo Alto. We will walk slowly along the flat San Francisquito Creek trail in Santa Clara County, crossing over a bridge into San Mateo County to explore the freshwater O’Connell Pond and nearby Bay Trail, and then continue out to the creek mouth before returning to the parking lot. Total distance is about 2 miles.
